DVD and BluRay Releases for April 12th, 2011

This is a very boring week...its like no one wanted to release they're shitty movies on DVD the same day as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Yup, that's right folks, go and grab your copy of Harry Potter 7.1 today! Personally, I will buy it to complete my collection, but I probably won't watch it much. I am and fan and a supporter of the Harry Potter franchise but I (like many other fans) do not like the "artistic" liberties they take with the movies....

C'est la vie

DVD and BluRay Releases for April 5th, 2011

So, this week a lot of movies that have been out for a while have been released on Blu Ray so this week there will be a lot of movies you've probably seen before.

Cailean hates Robert DeNiro for some stupid and unknown reason, so my first add today is Taxi Driver now available on Blu Ray, and if you love RDN like I do, you'll be interested to know that the flop Little Fockers is out today as well.

Tron, the original, not the so-so sequel, is out on Blu Ray! Would be interesting to see it in HD and I would love to see it there was any cool special features.

Who doesn't love Benny & Joon? Probably a lot of people...but I love it!!!!

So you might have heard about this movie before about a man who buys a realistic sex doll and is convinced it is his girlfriend. You might have thought it sounded creepy BUT IT'S FAR FROM IT! Lars and the Real Girl is a sweet story about a lonely man creating an alternate life and his community playing along with it. Its wonderful. WATCH IT!

My personal favorite of Shakespeare's plays Much Ado About Nothing is a romantic comedy like no other. Most of you guys are probably like "ugh..." but seriously, great cast!

Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves play brothers and Michael Keaton has a great scenes in it as well. Plus a young Kate Beckinsale made her major movie debut in this one!

If you are a Stanley Kubrick fan then you should get this one. A look into all the secrets and hidden messages in the Kubrick films.

Well thats it for this week. Happy watching.

Renewal Bliss (2011/2012 Season Part 2)

That's right folks! Fringe has been renewed.

Thank you for all your hard work and devotion to the show, Robert (aka MrPoo6321) thanks you.

I've only seen a few episodes but when I'm done with my Smallville marathon I'll go on a Fringe Binge... no? ok...

DVD and BluRay Releases for March 29th, 2011

Another week goes by another list of DVD and Blu Ray releases. I know we haven't posted much lately, just know we are hard at work on our podcast, soon we'll be uploading one...wish us luck...

I always love a good mystery but I'm not sure Dead Awake is, 'cause it has a really lame name.

But it does have a delightful cast of B-D list actors!

Nick Stahl (John Conner from Terminator 3), Rose McGowan (the substitute sister after Shannen Doherty in Charmed), and Amy Smart (that girl from The Butterfly Effect).

I always get surprised when they put classics on Blu Ray, I don't know if its because I feel that its not the same as on VHS or that I feel the picture won't look any better.

Anyway...The Ten Commandments if you haven't see it before, see it now!

Speaking of classics...Antony and Cleopatra is one of Shakespeare's histories adapted, directed, and starring Charlton Heston.

Again, something you should watch!

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Films 1-3)...honestly, I didn't know there was a 3rd.

Another amazing classic! I honestly don't know (or care) how old a film has to be to be considered a "classic" but this one is most definitely one in my book.

If only I could have this one and My Best Friend Is A Vampire I would be set for life.

Soylent Green IS PEOPLE!     ...'nuff said.

DVD and BluRay Releases for March 22nd, 2011

A 4 DVD collection of the Brady Bunch movies!

Bring me some George Glass!

Its strange...I only remember 2 movies, I didn't know there was 4.

Girls, Guns, and G-Strings I'm guessing these are not films about female FBI agents who play the up-right bass.

I'm sure there is a market for movies like these...I am not that market.

I love a spooky story just as much as the next girl, but what makes this one so interesting (besides the ridiculous cover) is that its called: Resident Randy's Ghost Stories. SOLD!

Finally!

I've been saying that I need more MJF and now I've got it!

I'm defiantly going to buy this to help me complete my Michael J. Fox discography!

So not a very exciting week...Tonight the boys and I are working on another podcast (after a 3 and 1/2 hour drive back home), hopefully this one will be good enough to post!

Renewal Bliss (2011/2012 Season Part 1)

Good news for you NBC fans, (I know this is a little late) Community has be renewed for another season.

The show was on the chopping block but they have officially brought it back for another season!

I'm not a huge fan (it's a bit too silly for me) but every now and then, I need to get a little Joel McHale fix if The Soup didn't air or my DVR was too full to record it.

Also, Parks and Recreation has also recieved the OK!

Again, not a show I'm extremely fond of, but I still really like it.

I'm glad its not gone yet, but there are shows on other networks that I'm sad to see leave.

Battlestar is back.....WITH SEXY NECROMANCERS!!!

Okay folks,

Ronald D. Moore of the great Battlestar Galactica Reboot has recently lost the spin off project, Caprica. That being said, the team behind Battlestar is still bringing us one more hopefully thread to carry on that frack-tackingly awesome legacy with "Blood & Chrome" a new upcoming miniseries/pilot.

That is all well and good, but as a rather large fan of Battlestar, i think perhaps its time has come. The show was fantastic, Caprica while enthralling, was unable to be the powerhouse that its precursor had been. My thoughts as to why such a unique show was canceled comes down to one thing. That magical element that allowed Battlestar Galactica to become what it was, was two things. Writing and Acting. It wasn't the sci-fi folks.

Although, Ronald D. Moore seems to agree with this hypothesis it would seem, rece
ntly during my scavenging throughout the intranet, I found what could quite possibly be the saving grace for any and all Battlestar addicts.

The show: 17th Precinct

The Cast: Jamie Bamber- Caolan Longstreet
James Callis- John
Tricia Helfer- Morgana

What is known:
Basically, Caprica 6 has returned to the screen as Morgana, a sexy, necromancing lady.
Baltar is back, and now he is a gruffy detective named John.
And then we have Apollo back on screen and perhaps leaving his insanely strong Brit accent as Caolan Longstreet...crime scene investigator in the Magical realm of the 17th Precinct.

Magic.......Battlestar..........gritty crime drama.....

Drools.

Oh and dont ye lowly internet readers forget, Ronald D. Moore is quite the fan of film noir. Ponder that my good friends.

Captain's Log- StarDate: 3-13-2011

This month's log will be a rant of the most random, I assure you. In my travels I tend to stray away from the "online video" craze, and yet, one cannot help but be forced at times to succumb to the temptation or invitation to do so.

With that, here are a few websites, videos or just areas of the internet i feel everybody should see.

How perfect is this. If you don't "get it" then you most likely do not know Frank Herbert's Dune, for shame. If you ARE familiar with Dune (starring Kyle MacLachlan, Brad Dourif, and Sting) then why haven't you clicked already! And yes you noobs that don't know Dune, i said Sting is in the film. WATCH IT.

  • Next up, a new spin on Japanese Theatrical presentation. CHECK THIS OUT. Quite possibly the best online video the internet has to offer.

Next up is a Cat Video, and whatever its pretty damn funny.

Notable watches of the week:

Critters

It's actually a pretty great movie, with a pretty great cast (Dee Wallace & M. Emmet Walsh). Tiny little aliens porcupines come to Earth and reek havok on everyone in a small town. What more could you ask for in a horror movie premiss?
Oh and we see shape changing alien bounty hunters in the film as well, just for that added realism.

Nevertheless Critters 2-4 still remain to be seen, something tells me, it is going to happen.

Video Game Purchases:

Pokemon White, is hands down the best Pokemon game I have ever played. The game mechanics have been taken up to a more cinematic style. The graphics are impeccable considering the genuine lack of change to the standard formula present throughout the years. Also, the new Pokemon for this newest Pokemon game (and counterpart Pokemon Black) are well thought out, well designed, and engrossingly intruiging. If you like Pokemon, and miss the good old gameboy color days, just go out and buy it.

Recent online store purchase:

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood New Downloadable Content!

Just purchased, haven't played.

Let's do this.

KEEP CHECKING OUT THE NEWS BUSTERS FOR MORE ON EVERYTHING NERDY!

DVD and BluRay Releases for March 8th, 2011

Outer space + Morgan Freeman = Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman brought by The Science Channel.

I don't know why I haven't watched this yet!

Exit Through the Gift Shop is a documentary about a crazy Frenchman who decides to become an artist and call himself "Mr. Brainwash" and befriend infamous street artist Banksy.

Banksy, however, does not see the dude as a friend.

Honestly, the artwork is pretty unoriginal, its like he is just redoing all of Andy Warhol's work, but it was a pretty funny documentary and it's on Netflix Instant right now.

Don't know. Don't care.

Zombie Farm. I just love the name.

This 1982 horror film, The Dorm that Dripped Blood, is about a group of people who are getting together to demolish an old dorm building but they are being hunted down by a serial killer.

IMDB gave it a 3.9 out of possible 10, which to me spells: INCREDIBLE.

I must see this beast.

Adventures of a Teenage Dragon Slayer has an amazing title, one that got my notice...however the synopsis give on IMDB was not something that really gets me going but here it is, if your interested:

"Arthur unwittingly discovers the secret to stopping an evil dragon who threatens to destroy all civilization."

GET IT!!!!

The Walking Dead Season 1, this show is amazing! The acting is perfect, the makeup is amazing, and the extras casting was simply superb!

Honestly great show, I want this BluRay partly because I want to see the special features!

Alright, so another week over, another set of DVD releases. I know other stuff comes out too, like last week 127 Hours was released but any old website can tell you that.

What other websites tell you about these gems?

See you next time.

DVD and BluRay Releases for March 1st, 2011

Another week, another batch of DVDs and BluRays...

The Canterville Ghost(1996) is an "adaption of the famous Oscar Wilde tale about a young American girl that helps a British ghost find rest and forgiveness," according to IMDB

To be honest, I've never seen it, but now I wish I had! It stars Sir Patrick Stewart and Neve Campbell, I bet its wonderful!

It'll be add to my Netflix Queue later.

Yes! Bambi is on BluRay!

Did you know:

-That the character listed as "Man" who killed Bambi's mother is listed #20 on AFI's top 100 Villians?
-The original nitrate negative of the film is kept in the Library of Congress!
-That there is about 1,000 words total in the entire script?

Sorry about that, I just love trivia...buy it!

Alive! Is Michael Jackson Really Dead? Oh God, please...

Yes, released today is a Documentary explaining how he apparently faked his death...I don't see how credible this is though...just go to Youtube and see how bad the trailer is.

No, not "its so bad its good!"...it's just bad.

The Prince of Pop is dead...get over it.

This movie needs no introduction. If you have never seen The Cable Guy then go out and get it NOW!

There is nothing more I can say...it's perfect.
Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde (1976) is the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...only with African Americans...

I have never seen this movie, but it was give a 4.6 out of a possible 10 on IMDB which only spells BRILLIANCE to me, so I'm sure I'd love it.

The tag-line for the film: "A screamin' demon rages inside, turnin' him into Mr Hyde... don't give him no sass or he'll kick yo' ass!"

hahaha!

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards (Part ?)

So we finished watching it and the ballots are in.

Robert 13 guesses correct.
Rikki 12 guesses correct.

Waiting to see if Cailean played along.

Couple of questions:

Was James Franco high while hosting?
Did Christian Bale forget his wife's name?

Bob Hope & Sci Fi

Well folks, bob hope is now being idolized on the academy awards. I love Bob Hope (the pirate and the princess, road to Singapore) he is by far one of the greatest entertainers of all time. I gotta say, i love this years academy awards. Bob Hope and 4 fracking academy awards for INCEPTION. 4 PEOPLE!!!!!!!

I love.

THE WOLFMAN!

Okay folks. The Wolfman just won an academy award. This is the year for sci-fi.

(i truly dislike that film)

Inception

Well here it is folks, the Academy Awards and INCEPTION has won 3 awards already and the night isnt over. THIS IS THE FUTURE PEOPLE!!!!!!

Sci Fi shall inherit the earth!!!!!

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards (Part 1)

So it's starting soon.

The Oscars.

I wanted to take a look at where nerdy movies stand in something as epic as the Academy Awards.

Top 10 Video Games of 2010 By CaptainCailean

There comes a time in every mans life when he sits down late one Thursday night and decides what games this year truly left there mark upon him. We saw Robbie B's list not too long ago, so following in suit is your captain, with my illustrious list of awesomeness. Here goes:

  1. Red Dead Redemption
  2. Bioshock 2
  3. Heavy Rain
  4. Assassins Creed Brotherhood
  5. Pokemon Soul Silver
  6. Castle Crashers (PS3)
  7. Spider Man Shattered Dimensions
  8. Dante's Inferno
  9. Pac Man Championship Edition Deluxe
  10. Space Invaders Infinity Gene
While my cohorts may not appreciate Dante's Inferno (in favor of the God of War) i found the game to be far more enjoyable, far more unique, and had tons more replay value than the 3rd God of War. Now, granted I defeated God of War 3, and really enjoyed it, i would have liked to see the downloadable character skins less restricting. You cannot unlock a trophy you missed if you are using one of the many awesome costumes....WHY. For that reason, its off the list.

DVD and BluRay Releases for February 22nd, 2011

Happy Tuesday! On to the DVDs:

Armless is the story of a married couple who is going through problems because the wife thinks her husband is hiding something...he is, he wants to cut his arms off.

I'm hoping this a dark, quirky, dramedy, but I'm not going to give it too much credit.

Glenn the Flying Robot sounds like a title of a children's movie or something like that, but after watching the trailer it seems worst...or better...so bad its good?

The CGI for Glenn is laughable, the beginning of the trailer made the movie seem like a sci-fi romantic, psychological drama, then (out of no-where) a flying robot fight scene between the bronze Glenn and another yellow robot.

Its like Bicentennial Man, but not as good.

Hell, I'd still watch it.

Psych: 9...dumb name...enough to make me think the movie's dumb.

However, I MIGHT watch it.....just because Cary Elwes (of Robin Hood: Men in Tights and The Princess Bride fame) is in it...

But then again, he's in two movies listed above (both of which I own) I could just watch those.

I'm not going to say a thing, I don't want to give anything away about the plot of Season 6.

So, just to let you know, Weeds: Season 6 is out on DVD and BluRay today, so go get it.

Now.

All-Star Superman. Yes, its a cartoon, but when I tell you the all-star cast (which I am geeking out about right now) you'll sooooo want to get it too!

Christina Hendricks (from Mad Men) ------------------------------- Lois Lane
Anthony LaPaglia (the cop friend from So I Married an Axe Murder) ---- Lex
Edward "Ed" Asner (legend) --------------------------------------- Perry White
James Denton (Desperate Housewives) ----------------- Clark Kent/Superman
Linda Cardellini (Scooby Doo) ------------------------------ Nasthalthia Luthor
Alexis Denisof (Buffy and Angel) ---------------------------- Dr. Leo Quintum
There are a few more "Oh, that guy," moments on the imdb page, but these are my favorites.

Happy watching!

Who Knew Zombie Slaughters Could Be So Gorgeous? - Dead Island Trailer

I know, I may be a little late in finding out about this one, but how awesome was that!? What has me really excited about this game is that you don't actually play as any of these characters! this is just part of ONE side story in the game. Dead Island has been described as a first-person game, not a shooter though as you will be using items in your environment to slice, bash and rip apart your zombie infected foes. Also, this game is supposed to have an entirely open world map and any part of it is accessible whenever you want to go. It might be tough getting there though as different classes of zombies will stand in your way of.... who knows? Those details are pretty much all that's been released about the game so one can only speculate as to how it will all play out. I'm personally hoping Dead Island has the fast-paced first person action of Mirror's Edge combined with the insane and frantic zombie battles in Left 4 Dead, with some interactive cinematic Heavy Rain elements thrown in for good measure. This is definitely a game to keep your eye on this year as we should eventually start to see gameplay videos in time.

The Smithsonian is a Total Nerd.

The Smithsonian rocks my socks.

It was founded in 1846 and is currently the largest and most extensive museum and research facility.

Just when I thought the Smithsonian wasn't nerdy enough, they got so much nerdier.

The Smithsonian Institute is opening a new exhibit called The Art of Video Games in which they will display games throughout the past 4 decades and the histories behind each game. Now, in our modern age, we have a chance to take part in an exhibit that relates very closely to my generation's childhood (and a few of the generations before me).

How long have you been a fan of video games? Since 2010? 2000? 1990? 1980? 1970?

Well, well well, then just head over to The Art of Video Games and cast your vote on which games should be inducted into the exhibit.

The Smithsonian states that the exhibit will open on March 16th, 2012, and will close on September 30th, 2012. No word on when the voting ends so do it now or forever hold your peace.

I've always wanted to go to the Smithsonian (I am a fan of Bones), looks like I need to start planning my trip for 2012.

Nerdy on Netflix- Mindwarp & Ponyo

Well team, here we are again ready to disclose some largely unknown greatness on everyones favorite the Netflix instant que.

This week, a great little piece of cinematic wonderment comes to you straight from 1992, Mindwarp. Starring the ever perfect Bruce Cambell (Army of Darkness...DUH) and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm) this post apocalyptic gem of REDICULOUS is a must watch for anyone with a Netflix instant que. The film is a distopic interpretation of technology gone wrong, with a sprinkling of pig faced monstermen and what some may call, overacting. However, this film surpasses all expectations and is the PERFECT choice for those who love all things Bruce. He is the pan-ultimate badass in this film. Hands down.

Be ready to laugh, and stare in awe at this great little gems ability to entertain and perplex. A must watch.

Up next in a starkly contrasting realm is a beautiful film, Ponyo. From 2008 this film is one in which anyone and everyone can fall in love. The animation is perfect, the voice acting above reproach. It is assuredly a lovely film for the whole family. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki (of whom you should have an intimate knowledge if you are on this blog) the film is a magical telling of a young boy and the sweet little Ponyo (an aquatic little girl that just loves ham) and their journey together, quite honestly its the most amazing story of love and family one could ask for. If you love anime, beauty, the sea or just love life Ponyo is the film for you.

As always this is your Captain signing off!

Flashback Theater - Memento (2000)

With the Oscars just around the corner and since Christopher Nolan's latest, Inception, is up for a few awards including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Visual Effects, I thought it would be cool to take a look back at the incredible psychological thriller that got his career off the ground: Memento. This movie stars Aussie actor Guy Pearce (The Time Machine, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) as Leonard, a man who has a condition not unlike Drew Barrymore's in 50 First Dates, albeit with a much darker twist. He remembers everything in his life up until he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the last thing he recalls is his wife dying. Unable to create new memories, he tries to track down his wife's murderer and every time he finds a clue he has it tattooed somewhere on his body. But can he remember what they all mean? The supporting cast is excellent as well, there's Carrie-Anne Moss ("Trinity" from The Matrix Trilogy) as a woman who tries to help Leonard get justice, although she has ulterior motives for doing so... And then there's Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos, and the first Matrix flick as well) as Teddy, a man that seems like he's taking advantage of Leonard's short-term memory deficiency for his own personal gain. Also, there's a great and creepy cameo (shot in black and white) featuring the under-rated character actor Stephen Tobolowsky (Radioland Murders, Heroes, Glee, and most recently Californication).

The real kicker for this movie though is that it starts at the end and ends at the beginning (not
unlike that episode of Seinfeld where they went to a wedding in Africa), and each scene takes you further towards the beginning and builds layer upon layer in each of the characters' personalities. It's not until the very end, err, beginning that you fully understand what is happening to poor Leonard. This movie is so good that once it's over you're going to want to start it all over with the knowledge you gained from your first viewing. I would say more about it, but I don't want to ruin anymore than I might have already. If you've never seen Memento, you'd do well to add it to your Netflix queue or check it out at your local video store. Or even better, buy it. It shouldn't be too expensive as the movie is 10.5 years old. Bonus features on the DVD include interviews with the cast and crew and a full short story "Memento Mori" written by Christopher Nolan's brother, Jonathon Nolan which inspired Christopher's screenplay. Be sure to check out the trailer below:

VERDICT: 9.5/10

Super Sexy NEW Superman

So, we've all known for a couple of weeks now that they have released the casting for Clark Kent/Superman for the film Superman: Man of Steel will be Henry Cavill (of The Tudors and The Count of Monte Cristo fame).

....

:)

Me = very happy. VERY.

...but apparently I'm not the only one...

I went to google images today to look for a picture of Henry Cavill for this blog post, and something caught my eye. People have been photo chopping shopping pictures of Cavill on Superman's body to get their jollies off for all I know.

Here are some of the worst BEST!
